00:00:20.806 --> 00:00:24.850
Now here's your host, david Kaiser.
00:00:25.940 --> 00:00:30.350
Hello, I am David and welcome back to another Mojo Minute.
00:00:30.350 --> 00:00:36.869
We all know people who have excelled in school and in the workplace.
00:00:36.869 --> 00:00:43.984
We have all heard about athletes, actors, dancers and musicians who have performed spectacularly.
00:00:43.984 --> 00:00:51.426
Some may have been blessed with exceptional natural abilities, but few could have risen to the top without a lot of hard work.
00:00:51.426 --> 00:01:02.009
Indeed, many people who were not endowed with God-given talents nevertheless managed to find their way to the top because of their exceptional determination.
00:01:03.119 --> 00:01:05.748
And short success is not a function of luck.
00:01:05.748 --> 00:01:12.563
It is a result of self-discipline, personal responsibility and perseverance the vital virtues.
00:01:12.563 --> 00:01:18.370
There are many other virtues, of course, and all are worthy of emulation.
00:01:18.370 --> 00:01:30.471
Many virtues lead to inner peace and even sanctification, but the vital virtues are the keys to worldly success and to the measure of happiness that worldly success provides.
00:01:30.471 --> 00:01:33.206
Let's start at the very beginning.
00:01:33.400 --> 00:01:47.625
Thousands of years ago, the Greek philosopher Aristotle, who was the pupil of Plato and the teacher of Alexander the Great, contemplated virtue In his Nikomachian ethics.
00:01:47.625 --> 00:01:51.992
He said the virtue is achieved by doing self-controlled acts.
00:01:51.992 --> 00:01:58.543
Moreover, according to Aristotle, more of virtue is necessary if people are to reach their potential.
00:01:58.543 --> 00:02:03.549
If we do not control our passions, we are destined for failure.
00:02:03.549 --> 00:02:20.885
This is not true just in ages gone by, but right here, right now, today, And that was the opening quote from Bill Donahue's excellent work War on Virtue, a new release book here in 2023.
00:02:20.885 --> 00:02:24.407
How the ruling class is killing the American dream.
00:02:24.407 --> 00:02:29.830
It's published by Crisis Publications out of Manchester, New Hampshire.
00:02:29.830 --> 00:02:33.628
Now why is there a war on virtue?
00:02:33.628 --> 00:02:41.045
It's my understanding that virtue was the building blocks of the moral life We just heard about that from Aristotle.
00:02:41.045 --> 00:02:44.444
It is, But some people don't like that.
00:02:45.319 --> 00:02:48.407
They want to tear down the Judeo-Christian heritage and tradition.
00:02:48.407 --> 00:02:53.549
That is what happens when you live in a post-Christian world.
00:02:53.549 --> 00:02:59.187
Let's go back to the book to unpack what is going on.
00:02:59.187 --> 00:03:17.969
Of course, economic success has never been the full measure of the American dream, And for Adams, the American dream was not a dream of merely material plenty, though that has doubtless counted heavily.
00:03:17.969 --> 00:03:19.905
It has been much more than that.
00:03:19.905 --> 00:03:25.091
It's been a dream about being able to grow to the fullest development as man and woman.
00:03:25.879 --> 00:03:35.528
To accomplish this goal, Adams recognized the need for a scale of values that recognized our communal, spiritual and intellectual life.
00:03:35.528 --> 00:03:41.820
Our scale of values was bequeathed to us by our Judeo-Christian heritage Pre-Emin.
00:03:41.820 --> 00:03:55.969
Among these values, and indeed among the values described by the Catholic Church, is the dignity of every human being, Regardless of our as described characteristics or our stations in life.
00:03:55.969 --> 00:03:58.983
We are all equal in the eyes of God.
00:03:58.983 --> 00:04:06.110
In fact, this tenant is so sacrosanct so it can never be compromised without sinning.
00:04:06.110 --> 00:04:08.502
Who ya?
00:04:08.502 --> 00:04:09.425
Wow?
00:04:09.425 --> 00:04:17.442
Donahue, with the help of this Adams fellow, nails it Exactly Why virtue matters.
00:04:17.442 --> 00:04:25.213
And what does Donahue call this scale of values taken from this guy, Adams?
00:04:25.213 --> 00:04:28.026
Well, first of all, who is this Adams guy?
00:04:28.026 --> 00:04:33.168
Well, he's a historian, James Truslow Adams.
00:04:33.168 --> 00:04:38.951
He is the guy who wrote the blockbuster of a book called The Epic of America.
00:04:38.951 --> 00:04:45.850
He's also the guy that coined the infamous term that we now all say is the American dream.
00:04:45.850 --> 00:04:52.141
And another person talked about the American dream, And let's go back to the book for that.
00:04:54.524 --> 00:05:02.778
In his influential work, The Book of Virtues, Bill Bennett cites the reverend Martin Luther King as representative of the virtue of perseverance.
00:05:02.778 --> 00:05:17.656
King never gave up the fight for civil rights, knowing full well that the American dream could be realized by calling upon Americans of all races to make good on the promise of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
00:05:17.656 --> 00:05:24.916
They were the basis of the quote promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.
00:05:24.916 --> 00:05:33.836
King saw it as his job to inspire his fellow African Americans to persevere in their struggle for freedom.
00:05:33.836 --> 00:05:38.790
So we have the virtue of perseverance.
00:05:38.790 --> 00:05:40.154
That's very important.
00:05:40.154 --> 00:05:46.798
What else is part of this scale of values that Adams talked about?
00:05:46.798 --> 00:05:48.369
Let's go back to the book.
00:05:49.884 --> 00:05:53.514
Virtue is a critical component of the scale of values.
00:05:53.514 --> 00:06:07.757
From the ancient world to the latest surveys of the American people, happiness has always been tied to virtue, And Catholicism has long taught that virtue builds character and is indispensable to the well-being of individuals in society.
00:06:07.757 --> 00:06:22.458
The cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance were described by Plato and Cicero, then, given a Catholic understanding, by Saints Augustine, Gregory the Great and Thomas Aquinas.
00:06:22.458 --> 00:06:32.286
But in addition to these foundational virtues, there is another virtue that is most important to the realization of the American dream Patriotism.
00:06:32.286 --> 00:06:42.074
It may not ensure economic success the way the vital virtues do, but it is a necessary component of the American dream.
00:06:42.074 --> 00:06:51.288
As Alexis de Tocqueville noted, love of country is a great binding force and it preserves the America.
00:06:51.288 --> 00:06:53.915
That about safes the American dream.
00:06:53.915 --> 00:07:03.017
To put it differently, if Americans became convinced that their country is fatally flawed, why will they bother to defend it?
00:07:03.017 --> 00:07:06.168
And we are seeing that right now.
00:07:06.168 --> 00:07:17.658
We have a very drastic, deep cut in recruiting for our military, because we are teaching unpatriotic things.
00:07:17.658 --> 00:07:21.512
And patriotism isn't a bad thing.
00:07:23.165 --> 00:07:25.673
In our next Mojo Minute we'll talk all about patriotism.
00:07:26.225 --> 00:07:28.130
Is it a vice or is it a virtue?
00:07:30.185 --> 00:07:46.814
Little PS here, a little disclaimer it's a virtue, But in today's Mojo Minute we need to recognize that there is a war on virtue and that war is trying to tear down the basic building blocks of our society.
00:07:48.165 --> 00:07:52.956
And to do otherwise is to believe in something not proven in over 3,000 years of human history.
00:07:52.956 --> 00:08:18.432
In fact, the great and distinguished historian Gerr Trub Hemelfarb wrote in the book Demoralization of Society from Victorian Virtues to Modern Values exactly this point, saying The great philosophers, she contends, insisted upon the importance of virtues not only for the good life of individuals but for the well-being of society and the state.
00:08:18.432 --> 00:08:25.595
We have been studying those very philosophers and we will keep studying them on purpose.
00:08:25.595 --> 00:08:37.196
To set the foundation for building the virtuous life and the flourishing life, To live a morally good life, we have to exercise the human virtues that they talk about.
00:08:37.196 --> 00:08:48.591
This was sank, or sank just 25 years ago, but has been steadily under attack since, So much so intensifying in the last 15 years.
00:08:48.591 --> 00:09:00.052
To recognize this war on virtue is to steer away from these counterfeits and to put yourself back on the path of a flourishing life.
