00:00:07.612 --> 00:00:20.807
Welcome to the Theory to Action podcast, where we examine the timeless treasures of wisdom from the great books in less time, to help you take action immediately and ultimately to create and lead a flourishing life.
00:00:20.807 --> 00:00:24.850
Now here's your host, david Kaiser.
00:00:25.460 --> 00:00:34.104
Hello, I am David and welcome back to another Mojo Minute and first of all I want to say thank you for listening.
00:00:34.104 --> 00:00:37.219
We appreciate you being here on a Theory to Action podcast.
00:00:37.219 --> 00:00:41.405
And number two happy Easter.
00:00:41.405 --> 00:00:50.084
We should be celebrating Easter every week since the resurrection, so happy Easter again.
00:00:50.084 --> 00:00:58.890
But for now, here's today's Nugget of Wisdom and, as always, let's kick it off with the opening quote.
00:01:00.841 --> 00:01:19.677
In my own training programs, I use the term front sight focus to describe the incredible concentration and single-mindedness SEALs tap into when pursuing a target, whether they're aiming a weapon at a terrorist, planning a raid or methodically working through a mess when things go wrong.
00:01:19.677 --> 00:01:27.853
Front sight focus refers to a shooter's gaze intently at the front sight of his weapon after lining it up with the target.
00:01:27.853 --> 00:01:40.027
When you do this, you remain super aware of your surroundings and have your object in your mind, but your attention narrows down to that piece of metal just a few inches in front of you.
00:01:40.027 --> 00:01:51.513
Compare that precise shot to working with more of a shotgun approach of aiming in the direction of your target and firing, hoping some of your scattered shots will strike.
00:01:51.513 --> 00:01:57.216
Maintaining a front sight focus has a calming and confidence building effect.
00:01:57.216 --> 00:02:07.884
To seal Notice, he must simply engage one target at a time and not shift focus until he's dispatched that target.
00:02:07.903 --> 00:02:16.264
And that wonderful quote comes to us from Mark Devine's book, the Way of the Seal Fantastic book.
00:02:16.264 --> 00:02:18.550
And Mark Devine is a former Navy SEAL.
00:02:18.550 --> 00:02:35.701
He runs an outfit on the West Coast called Seal Fit and his book Way of the Seal stands truly as a testament to his belief in mental toughness, leadership and the power of focusing one's mind on achieving extraordinary results.
00:02:35.701 --> 00:02:44.325
And speaking of harnessing one's mind, mark is also the author of the book Unbeatable Mind, which we have covered here from this microphone.
00:02:44.325 --> 00:02:47.413
I will put a link in the show notes to that Mojo Minute.
00:02:47.413 --> 00:02:53.492
But now, getting back to this nugget of wisdom we just talked about being front sight focused.
00:02:53.492 --> 00:03:08.412
I love how Mark says this is vastly different than the shotgun approach which, it seems, is most of our society's go-to tactic on about everything.
00:03:08.412 --> 00:03:14.467
And in fact, let's go back to the book and keep this train of thought going, because it's quite powerful.
00:03:16.414 --> 00:03:18.423
Seals don't like to waste ammo.
00:03:18.423 --> 00:03:20.183
We try to make each round count.
00:03:20.183 --> 00:03:27.587
This is far more effective than trying to engage multiple targets or worrying about them all at the same time.
00:03:27.587 --> 00:03:36.566
Admittedly, our training allows us to do this very fast and with incredible precision, making it appear as if we're tackling multiple targets simultaneously.
00:03:36.566 --> 00:03:41.717
Ultimately, all great successes follow this exact process, though.
00:03:41.717 --> 00:03:52.002
You identify a goal and then achieve it by knocking down one target after another, each one the right target for that shot.
00:03:52.002 --> 00:04:03.542
And when you learn to do this with a focus and precision of a Navy SEAL, understanding which targets to engage and how to avoid distractions, your success will skyrocket.
00:04:03.542 --> 00:04:17.480
In SEAL speak, your goals typically come in two ways you have your big, long-term goals, defining your end state, and you have your short-term sub-goals defining the path along the way.
00:04:17.480 --> 00:04:22.822
The former we refer to as the overall mission, while the latter are your targets.
00:04:22.822 --> 00:04:31.504
Your efforts to achieve each target are also interim missions, though typically smaller in scope and shorter in length.
00:04:31.504 --> 00:04:40.247
Seals work on one mission at a time, though there may be multiple targets to achieve the overall mission success.
00:04:40.247 --> 00:04:54.867
Ah, that is such good stuff there, and as I read that, I began to think about other authors who talked about this sense of being super focused on our task at hand and identifying the right targets.
00:04:54.867 --> 00:05:05.345
And so, just like in Mark Devine's Way of the seal, which talks about this front site focused tactic one of the other great authors we've covered here.
00:05:05.345 --> 00:05:06.307
From this microphone.
00:05:06.367 --> 00:05:21.408
Cal Newport, in his concept of deep work, offers a complimentary strategy for achieving this unparalleled productivity and insight into one's professional, personal endeavors.
00:05:21.408 --> 00:05:25.425
Or, in the SEAL, speak of tackling those missions.
00:05:25.425 --> 00:05:41.206
In fact, newport argues that in an increasingly distracted world, the ability to engage deeply with our work without interruption is both listen rare and invaluable.
00:05:41.206 --> 00:05:45.471
Remember we called this the 21st century superpower.
00:05:45.471 --> 00:05:54.341
Here's that quote superpower of the 21st century.
00:05:54.341 --> 00:06:01.807
As Newport defines, it, is professional activities performed in a state of distraction, free concentration, that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit.
00:06:01.807 --> 00:06:09.348
These efforts create new value, improve your skill and are hard to replicate.
00:06:09.348 --> 00:06:18.389
Sounds like becoming a Navy SEAL, or at least having the tactics and the front-site focus of a Navy SEAL, doesn't it?
00:06:18.389 --> 00:06:21.992
And the front sight focus of a Navy SEAL, doesn't it?
00:06:21.992 --> 00:06:36.410
In fact, newport suggests that perfecting this ability can lead to outstanding achievements, similar to how the Navy SEALs uses the front sight focus method for their precise and successful mission execution.
00:06:36.410 --> 00:06:42.557
Mission execution, now.
00:06:42.576 --> 00:06:48.569
Both ideas highlight the critical role of directing one's mental efforts towards a single goal or task to achieve those remarkable results.
00:06:48.569 --> 00:07:08.817
Mark Devine leverages the SEAL paradigm to illustrate the significance of focus in overcoming both physical and mental barriers, whereas Newport uses the same concept but for the intellectual task, showing that deep, concentrated work is essential for thriving in a world full of distractions.
00:07:08.817 --> 00:07:12.160
Isn't that super cool?
00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:18.565
I just love, love, love when we get these great connections of nuggets of wisdom.
00:07:18.565 --> 00:07:20.809
So how about you?
00:07:20.809 --> 00:07:23.190
How is your focus?
00:07:23.190 --> 00:07:28.314
No-transcript.
00:07:28.314 --> 00:07:34.744
Are you cranking out excellent work, distraction-free, either physically or intellectually, or both?
00:07:34.744 --> 00:07:42.103
If not, let's use today's nugget of wisdom to help us reach the next step in that ladder.
00:07:42.103 --> 00:07:59.250
Now, obviously, as I think about these things, this combination of the military discipline and the scholarly rigor, it offers a very powerful approach for anyone aiming to boost their productivity and accomplish their objectives.
00:07:59.250 --> 00:08:17.267
And for me, both the Way of the Seal and Deep Work, both books underscore the transformative effect of what focus and commitment does to achieving success, effect of what focus and commitment does to achieving success.
00:08:17.288 --> 00:08:27.353
So in today's Mojo Minute, perhaps in the coming days or weeks, you can integrate both principles from the way of the seal and deep work in your daily routine.
00:08:27.353 --> 00:08:31.738
First, start by identifying one major goal in your career or personal life.
00:08:31.738 --> 00:08:54.005
Break this down into actionable targets or tasks, similar to what a Navy SEAL would do to map out his mission, then dedicate blocks of time to engage in deep focus work on these individual tasks, undisturbed by our digital world's notifications and buzzes and beeps.
00:08:54.005 --> 00:08:58.738
For me, I usually block off an hour to an hour and a half.
00:08:58.738 --> 00:09:00.743
I call this deep work.
00:09:02.350 --> 00:09:26.600
In fact, I might text my family members and say, hey, I'm going deep, and they know they're probably not going to get an answer in the next hour, hour and a half, unless there's a fire or a medical emergency, and then I would document your progress and your obstacles and your insights, maybe journal those things, because this isn't just about achieving that one goal.
00:09:26.600 --> 00:09:36.759
It's about conditioning your mind, like Newport tells us, to begin to cultivate those habits of sustained focus and productivity.
00:09:36.759 --> 00:09:41.938
It's like exercise the more you do it, the better you're going to get.
00:09:41.938 --> 00:09:56.932
And if you do this practice repeatedly over the coming days and weeks, I promise you you will see progress, especially in developing this skill we call or we've just discovered now called front sight focus.
00:09:56.932 --> 00:10:09.996
It's a wonderful skill to have and if you do, if you do develop this, you will be living a flourishing life, one deep work session at a time.
