What happens when a bold vision defies conventional wisdom? In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative—promptly ridiculed as "Star Wars" by critics who declared it technologically impossible and strategically naive. Reagan asked a simple question that challenged decades of nuclear doctrine: "What if free people could live secure in the knowledge that their security did not rest upon the threat of instant US retaliation?"

Four decades later, the answer arrives in spectacular fashion through Israel's revolutionary three-tiered missile defense system. This episode traces the remarkable journey from Reagan's controversial speech to Israel's cutting-edge Iron Dome, David's Sling, and Arrow interceptors—technologies that have transformed from science fiction into life-saving realities.

Our book of the day "The Weapon Wizards: How Israel Became a High-Tech Military Superpower" by Yaakov Katz provides us with our roadmap to understand Israel's success.

What other "impossible" innovations might be dismissed today only to save lives tomorrow? Reagan's vindication through Israel's success offers a powerful reminder about the value of visionary thinking, especially when survival is at stake. 00:00:07.612 --> 00:00:20.807
Welcome to the Theory to Action podcast, where we examine the timeless treasures of wisdom from the great books in less time, to help you take action immediately and ultimately to create and lead a flourishing life.

00:00:20.807 --> 00:00:27.190
Now here's your host, david Kaiser, flourishing life.

00:00:27.210 --> 00:00:27.992
Now here's your host, david Kaiser.

00:00:27.992 --> 00:00:35.862
Hello, I am David, and welcome back to another Mojo Minute.

00:00:35.862 --> 00:00:37.524
As always, let's begin with the opening quote.

00:00:37.524 --> 00:00:41.890
My fellow Americans, thank you for sharing your time with me tonight.

00:00:41.890 --> 00:00:43.012
For sharing your time with me tonight.

00:00:43.031 --> 00:01:01.783
The subject I want to discuss with you peace, national security is both timely and important Timely because I've reached a decision which offers a new hope for our children in the 21st century, a decision I'll tell you about in a few minutes.

00:01:01.783 --> 00:01:08.686
And important because there's a very big decision that you must make for yourselves.

00:01:08.686 --> 00:01:19.013
This subject involves the most basic duty that any president or any people share the duty to protect and strengthen the peace.

00:01:19.013 --> 00:01:26.599
And that was President Ronald Reagan in March 1983.

00:01:26.599 --> 00:01:39.756
And later in the speech, he would go on to unveil a bold vision called the Strategic Defense Initiative, or SDI, better known as Star Wars.

00:01:39.756 --> 00:01:43.891
Now he spoke to the country and explained this simple policy.

00:01:43.891 --> 00:01:52.409
The defense policy of the United States is based on a simple premise the United States does not start fights.

00:01:52.409 --> 00:01:54.686
We will never be an aggressor.

00:01:54.686 --> 00:02:04.626
We maintain our strength in order to detour and defend against aggression, to preserve freedom and peace.

00:02:04.626 --> 00:02:05.990
End quote.

00:02:05.990 --> 00:02:36.533
And towards the end of the speech, he asked this simple question to the American people what if free people could live secure in the knowledge that their security did not rest upon the threat of instant US retaliation to deter a Soviet attack, that we could intercept and destroy strategic ballistic missiles before they reached our own soil or that of our allies?

00:02:36.533 --> 00:02:51.195
It was a radical idea Shields in the sky, lasers, space-based interceptors to stop nuclear missiles.

00:02:51.195 --> 00:02:55.424
It was indeed a radical idea.

00:02:55.424 --> 00:02:58.508
It was 1983 after all.

00:02:59.649 --> 00:03:04.794
The Democrats and the legacy media ridiculed it endlessly.

00:03:04.794 --> 00:03:14.680
The New York Times called it quote a costly exercise in futility.

00:03:14.680 --> 00:03:32.668
Senator Ted Kennedy, the Lion of the Senate, sneered at it from a Senate floor speech in which he said quote reckless Star War schemes.

00:03:32.668 --> 00:03:36.516
Almost everybody said it was too expensive, too impractical and a fantasy that the Soviets would just overwhelm with more missiles.

00:03:36.516 --> 00:03:40.444
But Reagan's vision wasn't just about technology.

00:03:40.444 --> 00:03:45.313
It was about breaking free from the fear of mutual assured destruction.

00:03:45.313 --> 00:03:58.099
That spark of imagination reached Israel, a nation under constant threat where survival demanded innovation.

00:03:59.125 --> 00:04:12.237
By 1986, israel teamed up with the United States to develop the Aero Missile System, inspired by SDI's dream of intercepting long-range ballistic missiles.

00:04:12.237 --> 00:04:21.815
By the 1991 Gulf War, when Iraq's Scud missiles hit Tel Aviv and Haifa, killing civilians and destroying homes.

00:04:21.815 --> 00:04:34.257
Arrow proved its urgency, drawing on SDI's hit-to-kill technology and space tracking concepts.

00:04:34.257 --> 00:04:46.819
Arrow 2 was operational by the year 2000, and a shield against threats like Iran's growing missile arsenal.

00:04:46.819 --> 00:04:49.773
But Israel didn't stop there.

00:04:49.773 --> 00:04:59.355
In the 2006 Lebanon War, with Hezbollah firing over 4,000 rockets, exposed the need for a short-range defense.

00:05:00.826 --> 00:05:06.798
The Iron Dome was born and deployed in 2011.

00:05:06.798 --> 00:05:25.158
As Yakov Katz writes in his wonderful book the Weapon Wizards this quote Iron Dome went operational March 2011, when the IDF deployed its first battery outside Beersheba.

00:05:25.158 --> 00:05:28.793
It didn't take long for the system to see action.

00:05:28.793 --> 00:05:35.374
On April 7th, iron Dome shot down its first rocket and within a few days it had intercepted eight more.

00:05:35.374 --> 00:05:44.430
Beyond saving lives Israeli lives Iron Dome proved to be a game-changer In recent IDF operations in Gaza.

00:05:44.430 --> 00:05:48.499
It had intercepted about 90% of the rockets fired its way.

00:05:48.499 --> 00:06:00.199
In 2012, the IDF did not send ground forces into Gaza and in 2014, it sent troops in for only an isolated, small-scale operation against the tunnels.

00:06:01.346 --> 00:06:18.769
With the Iron Dome shooting down most of the rockets flying at Israeli cities, the government had quote diplomatic maneuverability the ability to think before responding a precious commodity in times of crisis Systems.

00:06:18.769 --> 00:06:20.651
The scale of Iron Dome.

00:06:20.651 --> 00:06:29.440
Take, on average, seven years to design, design and manufacture Iron Dome just took three.

00:06:29.440 --> 00:06:37.379
How did Israel develop a revolutionary system like Iron Dome in such a short time?

00:06:37.379 --> 00:06:57.834
Part of the answer is that the Israeli military officers and businessmen, like gold, tend to be less risk-averse than their counterparts in other Western countries, and with a near 90% interception rate by 2025,.

00:06:57.834 --> 00:07:11.454
The Iron Dome saved countless lives from Hamas and Hezbollah attacks, and even more so in this latest war with Iran that we are all watching so closely now.

00:07:11.454 --> 00:07:20.139
But then came David's sling missile defense platform, introduced in 2017.

00:07:20.139 --> 00:07:29.795
It tackles mid-range threats like cruise missiles and drones, completing Israel's three-tiered defense system.

00:07:30.665 --> 00:07:31.666
Let's go back to the book.

00:07:31.666 --> 00:07:39.447
For Israel, systems like Iron Dome and Arrow are about more than saving lives.

00:07:39.447 --> 00:07:45.129
They give the country's leadership the ability to think before retaliating against rocket attacks.

00:07:45.129 --> 00:07:57.555
They provide the IDF with the ability to protect its bases and ensure operational continuity to keep planes taking off and landing even if missiles are being lobbed at runways.

00:07:57.555 --> 00:08:10.079
The IDF is working on a third system called David's Sling, which will be used to intercept rockets that are too big for the Iron Dome, but not big enough to be intercepted by the aero system.

00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:20.336
Additional countries around the world have also invested in missile defense systems the United States, japan and South Korea, among others.

00:08:20.336 --> 00:08:27.836
None, though, have created a multi-tier architecture with different systems, as Israel has.

00:08:28.959 --> 00:08:36.976
But even as Israel has deployed these systems, its ultimate prayer has not been answered.

00:08:36.976 --> 00:08:57.157
When Iron Dome was first deployed, there were some defense officials who predicted that if it worked, hamas would abandon its rockets, it would realize that the rockets are no longer effective and would stop spending money on amassing larger and larger arsenals.

00:08:57.157 --> 00:09:14.167
This has not happened, and as we sit here in 2025, this book was written in 2017, so we know what the last eight years have been like.

00:09:14.167 --> 00:09:16.692
Those rockets.

00:09:16.692 --> 00:09:31.860
Nobody would have abandoned those rockets Hamas, hezbollah and certainly not Iran, as they've fired more and more to Israel, especially in the last week.

00:09:31.860 --> 00:09:38.965
Now going back to David's sling, it has been used sparingly but more effectively since 2017.

00:09:38.965 --> 00:09:51.572
To catch everybody up 2018, it was first operational when two stunner missiles were launched against Syrian SS-21 missiles near the Golan Heights in the north of Israel.

00:09:51.572 --> 00:10:04.970
The interceptors self-destructed after the targets veered off, demonstrating that there was fail-safe mechanisms embedded in the counter anti-aircraft missile defense system.

00:10:05.831 --> 00:10:27.399
In 2023 through 2025, while specific engagements are classified David Sling has likely played an important role in countering Hezbollah's advanced rockets and Iran's cruise missiles during escalated conflicts, including Iran's October 2024 attack.

00:10:27.399 --> 00:10:36.839
Now we certainly know now that the integration is happening with David Sling in this current war over the last week.

00:10:36.839 --> 00:10:41.812
It operates alongside the Iron Dome and Aero missile systems.

00:10:41.812 --> 00:10:44.825
It creates a layered defense system.

00:10:44.825 --> 00:11:00.542
For example, during a multi-threat scenario, iron Dome would handle the short-range rockets, david Sling targets the mid-range missiles, and the Aero system intercepts ballistic threats, all coordinated through a unified command system.

00:11:00.542 --> 00:11:03.072
It's just incredible.

00:11:03.072 --> 00:11:18.099
Perhaps the best analogy of this is Israel's missile defense system is like a three-layered cake, each layer designed to counter a specific threat, seamlessly integrated to protect the nation.

00:11:18.099 --> 00:11:24.758
So back to Ronald Reagan's critics who called Star Wars impossible.

00:11:24.758 --> 00:11:28.734
Israel has proved them wrong.

00:11:28.734 --> 00:11:43.717
Sdi's technologies, from the sensors to the interceptors, to the real-time tracking, became the backbone of the Arrow, david Sling and Iron Dome systems.

00:11:43.717 --> 00:11:51.004
And Iron Dome systems.

00:11:51.004 --> 00:11:56.866
The US invested heavily, from $150 million for Arrow in the 1980s to $1.6 billion for the Iron Dome in 2021.

00:11:56.866 --> 00:12:00.327
But Israel brought the ingenuity Going back to the book.

00:12:02.388 --> 00:12:16.832
What Israel showed in 1973 and 2014 and throughout its history, though, is an ability to improvise in real time, under pressure and on the battlefield.

00:12:16.832 --> 00:12:29.576
As we've shown throughout this book, improvisation is a hallmark Israeli, characteristic one the country calls on often to confront different challenges and threats.

00:12:29.576 --> 00:12:37.577
The lesson from these experiences is that, as much as the IDF prepares, there will always be surprises.

00:12:37.577 --> 00:12:48.091
Israel thought it had stopped the delivery of the S-300 rocket missile to Iran and then found an upgraded version of the system in Syria.

00:12:48.091 --> 00:12:57.345
It thought rocket fire from Gaza was not a strategic threat until thousands of rockets rained down on its cities.

00:12:57.345 --> 00:13:09.955
As the region continues to undergo one of the greatest upheavals in history, idf commanders know that surprises are a sure thing and the best they can do is minimize their impact.

00:13:13.221 --> 00:13:26.190
Now, over the last some 35 years, israel has transformed itself from a small nation of 8 million, surrounded by radical enemies, into a tech superpower.

00:13:26.190 --> 00:13:47.053
It spends 4.9% of GDP on R&D and it's among the world's highest Israeli, or it's among the world's highest Israel's companies like Raphael and Israel Aerospace Industries lead globally, exporting $12 billion in defense tech annually.

00:13:47.053 --> 00:13:59.456
Universities produce top engineers, and Tel Aviv rivals the Silicon Valley in terms of what it produces and its output over the last several decades.

00:13:59.456 --> 00:14:09.894
So in today's Mojo Minute, in October of 2024, when Iran launched ballistic missiles, the Aero system stopped them at hypersonic speeds.

00:14:09.894 --> 00:14:33.422
100 kilometers up, the Iron Dome blocked Gaza's rockets, david Sling countered Hezbollah's drones and in the last week, when Iran repeatedly fired rockets and missiles of all types and sizes, fired rockets and missiles of all types and sizes.

00:14:33.442 --> 00:14:36.967
Israel's iron dome, david sling and the aero missile defense system stopped almost all of them.

00:14:36.967 --> 00:14:49.094
In fact, one of my best uh, best research sites open source intel follow this guy on twitter, or x as they call it now.

00:14:49.094 --> 00:14:56.768
He just posted last night important data Iran has launched 520 missiles at Israel.

00:14:56.768 --> 00:15:01.296
So far, 25 have struck, which is less than 5%.

00:15:01.296 --> 00:15:12.975
Israel Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs said Israel's strikes in Iran have achieved a 99% success rate so far.

00:15:12.975 --> 00:15:23.375
Just incredible stuff about how the Iron Dome, david's Sling and the Arrow missile defense systems are all working together.

00:15:23.375 --> 00:15:40.091
As President Reagan asked way back in 1983, wouldn't it be better to protect the American people rather than avenge them?

00:15:40.091 --> 00:15:49.937
Israel answered that past question just this past week, not just for itself, but for the whole world.

00:15:49.937 --> 00:15:57.402
Yes, yes, it would and yes, it does.

00:15:57.402 --> 00:16:07.144
Reagan's vindicated in Israel is reaping the fruits of his idea, from Star Wars to a multi-layered shield defense system.

00:16:07.144 --> 00:16:13.384
Israel's journey shows what happens when a nation dares to dream and builds the future.

00:16:13.384 --> 00:16:18.134
As always, keep fighting the good fight.
