A lot of us meet Fulton Sheen in fragments: a quote card, a grainy clip, a meme. But when you actually sit with his work, something steadier happens. During Holy Week, I reflect on three books that quietly re-ordered my interior life: Peace of Soul, The World’s First Love, and Life of Christ. They feel like three doors into one home, leading from a restless conscience, to a stronger Marian devotion, to a real encounter with Jesus Christ who won’t stay an abstract idea.

We talk candidly about Sheen’s challenge to the modern obsession with psychology and self-analysis. His point is both blunt and freeing: peace does not come from endlessly diagnosing yourself. It comes from owning sin, turning back to God, and receiving mercy especially through the sacrament of confession. If you’ve ever wondered why you feel spiritually stuck even while trying all the “right” self-help moves, this conversation names the deeper ache and offers a concrete path forward.

Then we shift to Mary. Sheen refuses to treat Marian devotion as an optional extra; he presents her as a woman placed at the center of salvation history, able to step into personal and cultural crisis and quietly reorder it around Christ. When the world feels like it’s coming apart, his advice is simple: don’t decrease devotion, double down.

Finally, we walk with Sheen through the Gospels and linger on his striking Eden and Gethsemane imagery, then relive the powerful 1979 moment when Pope John Paul II embraces the aging archbishop and says, “You have written and spoken well of the Lord Jesus.” With Fulton Sheen’s beatification set for 2026, this is a timely invitation to make Holy Week concrete. Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more listeners can find these Catholic spiritual classics.

00:00:07.280 --> 00:00:21.199
Welcome to the Theory to Action Podcast, where we examine the timeless treasures of wisdom from the great books in less time to help you take action immediately and ultimately to create and lead a flourishing life.

00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:25.199
Now, here's your host, David Kaiser.

00:00:28.559 --> 00:00:32.880
Hello, I am David, and welcome back to another Mojo Moment.

00:00:33.759 --> 00:00:37.600
And happy Holy Week and Happy Easter to each of you.

00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:45.520
Most Catholics today know Fulton Sheen through grainy black and white clips and memes on social media.

00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:49.439
For me, it started a lot quieter than that.

00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:55.679
I was a young Catholic, just starting out trying to figure the whole Catholic thing out.

00:00:56.000 --> 00:01:01.679
All my questions, some of my guilt, and a lot of my hopes as a young Catholic.

00:01:01.920 --> 00:01:12.400
And three books by Fulton Sheen met me right there Peace of Soul, The World's First Love, and by far my favorite, Life of Christ.

00:01:12.719 --> 00:01:15.359
Those weren't just good spiritual reading.

00:01:15.439 --> 00:01:18.959
They were like three different doors into the same house.

00:01:19.280 --> 00:01:28.239
The door of the restless mind, the door of Marian devotion, and the door that opens straight into the heart of Jesus.

00:01:28.560 --> 00:01:30.959
Peace of soul caught me first.

00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:37.040
In fact, let's go now and grab a first pull quote from that book.

00:01:37.359 --> 00:01:52.560
Those who deny guilt and sin are like the Pharisees of old who thought our Savior had a guilt complex, because he accused them of being whited sepulchres, outside clean, inside full of dead men's bones.

00:01:52.879 --> 00:02:09.360
Those who admit that they are guilty are like the public sinners and the publicans of whom our Lord said, Amen, I say to you, that the publicans and the harlots shall go into the kingdom of God before you Matthew twenty one thirty one.

00:02:10.479 --> 00:02:15.520
Those who think they are healthy but have a hidden moral cancer are incurable.

00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:18.960
The sick who want to be healed have a chance.

00:02:19.280 --> 00:02:28.240
All denial of guilt keeps people out of the area of love, and by inducing self righteousness prevents a cure.

00:02:28.479 --> 00:02:35.759
Those two facts I'm sorry, those the two facts of healing in the physical order are these.

00:02:36.080 --> 00:02:44.560
A physician cannot heal unless we put ourselves into his hands, and we will not put ourselves into his hands unless we know that we are sick.

00:02:44.800 --> 00:02:50.479
In like manner, a sinner's awareness of sin is one requisite for his recovery.

00:02:50.639 --> 00:02:53.039
The other is his longing for God.

00:02:53.360 --> 00:02:58.479
When we long for God, we do so not as sinners, but as lovers.

00:02:59.439 --> 00:03:04.560
And again, that's Fulton Sheen from Peace of Soul.

00:03:05.280 --> 00:03:13.199
Now, on the surface, this book is Sheen's answer to the modern obsession with psychology.

00:03:13.520 --> 00:03:16.240
Freud therapy, the subconscious.

00:03:16.479 --> 00:03:18.800
But what it did for me was much simpler.

00:03:18.879 --> 00:03:23.439
It convinced me that my unease wasn't just anxiety or neurosis.

00:03:23.520 --> 00:03:29.520
It was a moral and spiritual restlessness calling me to confession and conversion.

00:03:30.159 --> 00:03:33.120
Sheen's point is brutal and liberating at the same time.

00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:37.919
You don't get to peace of soul by endlessly analyzing yourselves.

00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:43.280
You get it by turning to God and owning your sin and receiving mercy.

00:03:43.520 --> 00:03:47.360
Now, for a young Catholic like me, that was huge.

00:03:48.080 --> 00:03:51.919
Told me that the sacrament of confession isn't a relic.

00:03:52.319 --> 00:04:00.080
It's an actual, it's actually more effective than self-help programs, especially when it comes to the deep stuff.

00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:04.639
Now, it would take me five years and a move from Washington, D.C.

00:04:04.879 --> 00:04:14.960
back to my hometown of Columbus, Ohio, and then finding a Dominican parish in Columbus where they offer confessions more than any other parish I've ever seen.

00:04:15.360 --> 00:04:18.160
All that was a game changer for me.

00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:27.519
The Sacrament of Confession changed my life, as it has changed countless lives and souls down through all the ages.

00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:32.720
Now, the second book I read was The World's First Love.

00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:40.240
If peace of soul settled my nerves, then this book, The World's First Love, rewired my imagination.

00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:44.480
She just doesn't talk about Mary as a sentimental extra.

00:04:44.800 --> 00:05:02.399
He presents her as a woman in the center of salvation history, and one God dreamed of from all eternity, the mother who can step into every human crisis, personal, cultural, political, and quietly reorder it around Christ.

00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:09.600
For me, as a young Catholic, that changed Marian devotion extremely well.

00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:21.120
Changed it so much from the optional extra prayers to something more like a strategy for surviving confused and very dark world.

00:05:21.439 --> 00:05:29.199
She made it clear if the world was falling apart, you didn't decrease your Marian devotion, you doubled down.

00:05:29.680 --> 00:05:35.680
And let me repeat that point because it's so I have to emphasize it so much.

00:05:36.480 --> 00:05:42.000
She made it clear if the world is falling apart, you don't decrease your Marian devotion.

00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:43.600
You double down.

00:05:44.399 --> 00:05:48.639
Double down, I did over the next 25 years and counting.

00:05:48.959 --> 00:05:51.519
And then there was the life of Christ.

00:05:52.319 --> 00:06:03.360
You know, if if the other two books help me to trust the church and love Mary, Life of Christ was the one that made me fall in love with our Lord Jesus Himself.

00:06:03.759 --> 00:06:16.800
Sheen walks through the Gospels from Bethlehem to Calvary to the empty tomb with this blend of scriptural depth and historical detail and almost cinematic imagination.

00:06:17.040 --> 00:06:23.839
He doesn't just comment on the text, he enters us into it, and he somehow drags us with him.

00:06:24.079 --> 00:06:26.319
That book did something I didn't fully expect.

00:06:26.480 --> 00:06:40.000
It made Christ feel more human, more divine, more close and majestic, less like a religious idea and more like a living person to respond to.

00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:52.639
To this day, Life of Christ is my favorite of all of Fulton Sheen's works because it keeps me, it keeps doing for me what Sheen had done for millions on radio and television.

00:06:52.879 --> 00:06:57.600
Puts me at the foot of the cross and then at the door of the empty tomb.

00:06:57.839 --> 00:07:04.639
And it asks that most important question What will you do with this Christ?

00:07:05.839 --> 00:07:08.720
In fact, let's grab a quote from that book too.

00:07:09.040 --> 00:07:19.279
As Adam lost the heritage of union with God in the garden, so now our blessed Lord ushered in its restoration in a garden.

00:07:19.759 --> 00:07:25.680
Eden and Gethsemane were the two gardens around which revolved the fate of humanity.

00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:32.079
In Eden Adam sinned, in Gethsemane, Christ took humanity's sin upon himself.

00:07:32.319 --> 00:07:36.240
In Eden Adam hid himself from God.

00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:40.240
In Gethsemane Christ interceded with his father.

00:07:40.639 --> 00:07:45.199
In Eden God sought out Adam in his sin of rebellion.

00:07:45.439 --> 00:07:51.920
In Ghessemane, the new Adam sought out the Father in his submission and resignation.

00:07:52.319 --> 00:08:01.519
In Eden a sword was drawn to prevent entrance into the garden, and thus immortalizing and thus immortalizing of evil.

00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:04.959
In Gethsemane the sword would be sheathed.

00:08:05.759 --> 00:08:09.680
And again, that is Fulton Sheen in Life of Christ.

00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:12.399
Man, that is so good.

00:08:13.279 --> 00:08:15.279
Such great theology there.

00:08:15.759 --> 00:08:18.800
Such great theology all over the book, frankly.

00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:23.360
Now, one of the great moments of the American Church is this event.

00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:32.639
Hold these three books in your mind Peace of Conscience, Love of Mary, Love of Jesus, and fast forward to October of 79, 1979.

00:08:32.960 --> 00:08:36.240
Pope John Paul II is on his first trip to the United States.

00:08:36.399 --> 00:08:37.759
He comes to St.

00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:46.480
Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, and somewhere in that crowd is an old frail archbishop named Fulton Sheen.

00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:59.759
By then, his TV days are long gone, the bright lights, the standing room, only auditoriums, the Emmys that he won, all that's behind him.

00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:02.879
Physically, he's near the end.

00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:06.320
Spiritually, he's been preparing for this for decades.

00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:12.559
But here is the connection that hits me.

00:09:12.879 --> 00:09:25.679
When I think about Sheen at that moment, old weak, almost finished, I can't help but see him through the lens of those three books that carried me when I was just beginning.

00:09:26.159 --> 00:09:42.240
Peace of soul and his insistence on confession and the interior conversion, the world's first love, and his Marian devotion and life of Christ, and his relentless focus on the person of Jesus.

00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:50.879
That day in New York, John Paul II works his way through the clergy, blessing and greeting and moving quickly.

00:09:51.919 --> 00:09:55.360
And then he sees Fulton Sheen.

00:09:56.159 --> 00:09:58.960
Witnesses say the Pope's face changes.

00:09:59.279 --> 00:10:08.799
He recognizes not just a bishop, but a man whose voice and words had evangelized America and the world for decades.

00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:23.360
One can think of a young Kerolatiwa behind the Iron Curtain in the 1950s and 60s getting bits and pieces of this American bishop on that new TV and radio broadcast.

00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:27.600
And his message of Christ is being seen worldwide.

00:10:32.320 --> 00:10:34.559
For Carol Watiwa, it uplifts him.

00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:42.639
It buoys his spirit, provides a glimpse and moments of grace from this American bishop.

00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:46.879
Now fast forward and it's 1979 in New York City.

00:10:47.200 --> 00:10:49.840
Fulton Sheen drops to his knees.

00:10:50.159 --> 00:10:52.159
This is the part that gets me.

00:10:52.639 --> 00:11:04.320
One old evangelist kneeling before another, both men who had spent their lives trying to draw people to Christ from pulpits, from classrooms, from TV studios, from stadiums.

00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:09.279
John Paul II reaches down, embraces him.

00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:11.919
The cameras are rolling.

00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:14.799
But the moment is oddly intimate.

00:11:15.200 --> 00:11:20.480
You get the sense something more than a polite greeting is happening.

00:11:20.879 --> 00:11:24.159
In my mind that embraces like the church herself.

00:11:24.639 --> 00:11:37.200
One generation handing on the baton to another, one great preacher affirming another, all under the gaze of the same Lord that they both had served.

00:11:38.960 --> 00:11:40.799
And then the Pope speaks.

00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:45.840
He doesn't analyze Sheen's media strategy.

00:11:46.320 --> 00:11:48.639
He doesn't break down his philosophy.

00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:53.200
He doesn't list all the books, all the shows, all the converts.

00:11:54.799 --> 00:11:56.559
Sums up the whole thing.

00:11:57.120 --> 00:12:11.120
He sums up the radio years, the television years, the late-night writing sessions that produced my three favorite books, Peace of Soul, The World's First Love, and Life of Christ.

00:12:12.720 --> 00:12:17.840
Even sums up those hidden holy hours of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

00:12:19.840 --> 00:12:28.080
And then John Paul II gives us a verdict on the entire life of Fulton Sheen's preaching Christ to the restless modern world.

00:12:28.559 --> 00:12:37.759
And his words land not just on Fulton Sheen, but in a way on all of us who have had our Catholic life shaped by this man's work.

00:12:38.559 --> 00:12:46.960
John Paul holds him and says, You have written and spoken well of the Lord Jesus.

00:12:47.519 --> 00:12:49.679
You are a loyal son of the Church.

00:12:51.360 --> 00:12:52.000
Boy.

00:12:52.720 --> 00:12:54.480
What profound words.

00:12:55.600 --> 00:13:11.440
Two months later, Fulton Sheen would pass on to eternal life on December 9th, 1979, and to which the joy of so many of us now in 2026 will be the very feast day of Fulton Sheen.

00:13:11.759 --> 00:13:21.039
Yes, you heard that right, Fulton Sheen will be declared blessed, one stage away from becoming a full saint in the official language of the church.

00:13:21.279 --> 00:13:26.159
And it'll be so close to that Marian Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady.

00:13:27.039 --> 00:13:36.799
Now, to be clear, beatification means that he has one miracle that has been approved after all the science can explain it.

00:13:37.039 --> 00:13:43.039
And that miracle is attributed to the intercession of the soon-to-be Blessed Fulton Sheen.

00:13:44.240 --> 00:13:50.639
Fulton Sheen's Beatific Mass will be on September 24th, 2026, in St.

00:13:50.799 --> 00:13:51.840
Louis, Missouri.

00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:56.879
So for me, that will be a most joyous day.

00:13:57.360 --> 00:14:00.399
Another American person declared blessed.

00:14:00.639 --> 00:14:11.279
So in today's mojo minute, let me join Saint John Paul II in saying, Fulton Sheen, you have written and spoken well of the Lord Jesus.

00:14:11.600 --> 00:14:14.320
You are a loyal son of the church.

00:14:14.639 --> 00:14:22.639
May all of his books, his writings, and his media bring you closer to our Lord this holy week and for all the weeks going out in the future.

00:14:22.799 --> 00:14:26.159
For me, Fulton Sheen has always been an inspiration.

00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:29.200
And God bless Fulton Sheen.

00:14:29.519 --> 00:14:33.679
And God bless each of you this holy week of 2026.

00:14:33.759 --> 00:14:37.519
And as always, keep fighting the good fight.

00:14:40.159 --> 00:14:41.759
