Brief Summary
From his childhood in Jerusalem to becoming Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu’s Bibi: My Story chronicles a life filled with triumphs, challenges, and remarkable resilience. Part memoir, part political history, this book offers a front-row seat to the defining moments in the life of a leader who has shaped modern Israel.
This is seriously one of the best biographies I’ve ever read. Benjamin Netanyahu’s life is just incredible, and he’s been such a remarkable leader for the Jewish people and the state of Israel throughout most of his life
In this insightful memoir, Netanyahu reflects on his storied military service, years as a diplomat and politician, and the hurdles faced in advancing Israel’s security and prosperity. With vivid storytelling, he shares personal anecdotes and recounts pivotal decisions that shaped his leadership legacy. This deeply personal narrative brings to life the complexity of his public and private worlds, capturing the essence of a leader navigating the intersection of history, politics, and personal values.
As we write this Academy Book Brief, the U.S. has just carried out a mission to dismantle three nuclear sites in Iran, which has been the biggest exporter of terrorism and Israel's top threat for the past 46 years. Here's hoping for more peaceful times ahead for the Jewish people and for Bibi and his family.
Two Significant Insights
#1—Fighting Terrorism at Every Turn
“The terrorists assaulted the basic foundations of the laws of war, obliterating the distinction between combatants and noncombatants. By habituating people to the idea that their supposedly just causes justified mass murder, the terrorists neutered man’s sense of sin. My father went a step further. It was not only that the terrorists’ goals did not justify the murderous means they chose, he said. It was that their choice of means revealed what their true aims were, and these certainly were not freedom and human rights. Those who trample human rights into dust by deliberately blowing up buses full of children or crushing a baby’s skull do not create democracies. They have a totalitarian mind-set that recognizes no limits to power. When they actually gain power they inevitably create not democracies but fearful dictatorships that continue to terrorize their subjects. The choice of means reveals what the true aims are. This fundamental truth is revealed over and over again, from the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia to the Taliban in Afghanistan to Hamas in Gaza.
Bibi lost his brother Yoni to terrorists, and ever since, he’s dedicated his life to fighting terrorism. Black Saturday, October 7, 2023—Israel’s 9/11—marked a huge turning point for the Jewish people. Since that day, Israel has taken massive steps to dismantle and weaken terrorist groups across the Middle East.
With Bibi’s leadership, Israel has significantly reduced the power of Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and other proxies in Syria and Iraq. And in just the last two weeks, they’ve made huge strides in limiting the influence of Iran, the so-called head of the snake of terrorism.
It’s an incredible achievement, all under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu!
#2—Milton Friedman was Right!
In 2005, the Nobel laureate Milton Friedman wrote this about Israel’s economic malaise:
Israel is a nation with great economic potential, yet it is a clear case of arrested economic development. Israel’s human capital and geographical location at the heart of the Middle East should have naturally produced a thriving and prosperous economy.
Israel can be the Hong Kong of the Middle East but that potential has been blocked for decades.
What held it back? Far reaching and rigid government intervention in the economy, socialist policies embraced by the government and unnecessary state ownership of critical means of production.
Israel can change all this by adopting broad free market policies.
Fortunately, Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who specialized in economic issues, understands the problem and is willing to use his political capital to bring a solution. This was easier said than done…
…In the land of the Bible, the economic race went not to the swift, but to those with better political connections. Hard work was not rewarded; strikes were. The unions holding the economic chokepoints of the country in the seaports and airports, in the banks and in the electricity and water monopolies went on strike with astonishing frequency, paralyzing the economy and winning enormous pay raises to boot.
“Israel can be the Hong Kong of the Middle East”. Is that not a mind blowing statement?
It’s hard to imagine the success of a place like Hong Kong being replicated, but that’s exactly what’s happened with Israel—and it’s amazing to see. In just a short 20 years, Israel has become the "Hong Kong of the Middle East," growing rapidly despite facing constant security threats. It’s incredible! A lot of this success can be credited to leaders like Bibi, who studied free-market principles from great minds like Milton Friedman and put those reforms into action.

Nuggets of Wisdom!
This book is packed with so much wisdom—I’ve highlighted, underlined, and marked up my copy, and I’m pretty sure you’ll do the same!
Reading Bibi: My Story was hands down one of the best biographies I’ve ever read. It stops just before October 7, 2023, so I’m really hoping there’s a second edition or maybe even a volume 2 coming.
That said, this book is a must-read if you want to learn about one of the most impactful Israeli leaders of all time—someone I’d call the Winston Churchill of our era. Netanyahu doesn’t just focus on the big-picture geopolitical strategies; he also takes you behind the scenes to the tough decisions where principles and pressure collide.
What really stood out to me was how he balances personal vulnerability with sharp strategic thinking. From the heartbreaking loss of his brother Yonatan during the Entebbe raid to navigating the complexities of international diplomacy, his story is full of lessons on resilience, leadership, and the human spirit.
Honestly, such a fantastic read!!
Final Recommendation
Bibi: My Story is a must-read for anyone interested in politics, history, or leadership. This is perfect for anyone wanting to dive into the complexities of Middle Eastern geopolitics or looking for inspiration from a leader who’s spent decades navigating global affairs. He’s led his country through a tough region to become an economic and tech powerhouse!
