Brief Summary

Mark Levin wrote American Marxism in 2021. That date matters.

He did not write it in reaction to this year’s headlines. He wrote it five years ago, as a warning.

Now, unfortunately in 2026, that warning is coming true.

In this book, Levin names the ideology he believes is spreading through American life. He does not call it progressivism. He does not call it social justice. He calls it Marxism.

Communism, Socialism, and the aforementioned Marxism are all from the same family, and Levin treats them that way throughout the book.

He traces the history from Marx and Engels through the Frankfurt School, through critical race theory, through the environmental movement, through Big Tech, through the university system. He names the specific movements. He names the funders. He names the professors. This is not a general argument. It is a documented case.

Levin made this same argument about government power in his earlier book, Liberty and Tyranny. He called the threat there the Statist. In this book, he gives that threat a more specific name: Marxist.

At 320 pages, this is Levin’s longest book by far. He needed the room. This is not a short warning. It is a full case, laid out point by point.

It is a dense book so it took me a while to get through it. But it is worth it! I promise you.

Two Important Quotes

1. “The counter revolution to the American revolution is in full force, and it can no longer be dismissed or ignored for it is devouring our society and culture, swirling around everyday lives and ubiquitous in our politics, schools, media, and entertainment. Once a most unrelatable fringe in subterranean movement, it is here. It is everywhere. You, your children, your grandchildren are now immersed in it. and it threatens to destroy the greatest nation ever established, along with your freedom, family, and security. Of course, the primary difference between the counter revolution and the American revolution is that the former seeks to destroy American society and impose autocratic role. And the latter sought to protect American society and institute representative government. The counter revolution or movement of which I speak is Marxism.”

Levin calls this a counter-revolution, not a trend. That word choice is deliberate. A trend fades. A counter-revolution is built to replace what came before it.

He draws a clear line here. The American Revolution protected a society and built representative government. This movement seeks to destroy a society and impose autocratic rule. Those are opposite goals.

2. “The purpose of this book is to awaken the millions of patriotic Americans who love their country, freedom and family, to the reality of Marxism’s rapidly spreading influence throughout our nation. What is occurring in our country is not a temporary fad or passing event. American Marxism exists. It is here and now. And, indeed, it is pervasive. And its multitude of hybrid but often interlocking movements are actively working to destroy our society and culture. and overthrow the country as we know it. Many of the individuals, groups who collectively make up this movement are unknown to most Americans or operate in ways in which most Americans are unaware. Thus, this book is written to introduce you to a representative sample of them. Some, perhaps more familiar than others, and to provide you with specific examples of their writings, ideas, and activities so you can know of them and hear from them.”

Levin states his purpose plainly here. He wants to wake people up.

Notice the word “hybrid.” He is not describing one group with one name. He is describing many groups, working through different channels, moving toward the same goal.

My Nuggets of Wisdom!

I trust Levin’s judgment on this because of his track record. His analysis has been ahead of events before, not behind them. That track record is why I take this book seriously. This is not just an argument anymore. It is happening.

Here comes our most important nugget.

Marxism is not arriving in America the way it arrived in Russia or China. It is arriving through schools, through corporate training programs, and through institutions most people trust... or used to trust. That is the core argument of this book.

The numbers back this up. Membership in the Democratic Socialists of America stayed at roughly 5,000 to 7,000 people for decades, through 2015.

• By May 2017, membership had grown to about 21,000

• By 2021, it reached a first peak of nearly 79,000

• By December 2025, it stood at 92,912

• On July 4, 2026, DSA announced it had passed 120,000 members, making it the largest socialist organization in American history, larger than Eugene Debs’ Socialist Party at its 1912 peak

That growth happened on America’s 250th birthday. The largest socialist organization this country has ever had reached its highest point on the same day we celebrated 250 years of independence.

The Black Book of Communism, published by Harvard University Press, documents over one hundred million people killed under communist and socialist regimes in the twentieth century. That number is not ancient history. It is the track record of the same ideology Levin is describing here.

Marxism, communism, and socialism are the same family. They have never delivered what they promise. They have only ever produced the same result, wherever they have been tried. The end result has always been destruction. Study Mao’s China. Study Russia in the eighty-plus years after the Russian Revolution. Study Pol Pot’s Cambodia. Or study the most recent example, Chavez’s Venezuela. Every single one of them ended in destruction and carnage.

Our founders built a government of limited, divided powers because they distrusted concentrated power. That is the direct opposite of what Marxism requires. Levin’s argument is that this same old concentration of power is now showing up in America under new names.

That’s bad!

I believe the founders would recognize this threat and stand against it. Abraham Lincoln would recognize it. Dwight Eisenhower, who led the fight against totalitarian tyranny in Europe, would recognize it too. Ronald Reagan spent his political life naming this same threat under its Soviet name. Levin is naming it under its American name.

I want to say this plainly. This is the greatest internal threat to this country since the Civil War, when the Southern states chose to break the union apart rather than give up slavery.

I do not say that to be dramatic.

I say it because that is where this book has led me!

Final Recommendation

Read this book if something has felt off to you in a training at work, or in the language your kids are bringing home from school, and you could not name what it was. Levin names it, and he backs it up with sources.

He wrote this warning five years ago. What he warned about is now measurable, in real numbers, happening in real time.

Here is what I want you to do.

First, know what you are looking at. Read this book. Read America’s Cultural Revolution by Christopher Rufo alongside it. Together they show you the ideology and how it moves through institutions.

Then pray for our country. Again, not to be dramatic, but this is the most serious internal threat we have faced since the Civil War. That threat was defeated. This one can be too, but it will take clear eyes and it will take most importantly alot of prayer and moving the hearts of our fellow citizens to turn away from this demonic ideology!
