Brief Summary

I picked up this book last month because of the title. I assumed it was about America. It’s not. It’s about Britain and the UK.

Matt Goodwin is an academic and a former Brexit-era commentator who has spent his career studying populism and the widening gap between ordinary citizens and the people who govern them.

In Suicide of a Nation, he makes a case that is hard to shake once you’ve read it.

Literally, very hard to shake once you have read this compelling book!

His thesis: Britain is not being invaded and it is not being conquered.

It is being abandoned by the very people entrusted to protect it — Parliament (BOTH political parties), the courts, the police, the BBC, the universities etc.

Goodwin calls their governing ideology “suicidal empathy,” (key term that we will come back to later) and he backs it up with page after page of immigration numbers, crime data, and demographic forecasts.

This book sits close in spirit to Douglas Murray’s The Strange Death of Europe.

Both writers are looking at the same continent and arriving at the same conclusion: a civilization can die from the inside, quietly, while its leaders congratulate themselves for their compassion.

Goodwin’s contribution is the sheer weight of evidence he brings — charts, statistics, and demographic projections that leave little room for argument.

At first, I could not believe what I was reading. I knew the UK was struggling. I did not know the country was, in Goodwin’s words, walking off a ledge — and that London, by his account in 2026, is most likely if not, already gone.

Already gone?! crazy but true!

I agree with him!

Two Important Quotes

1. “Britain, I believe, is living through such a moment. For decades, the institutions that once embodied our nation — Parliament, the civil service, the courts, the police, the BBC, the universities, the schools, the museums — have drifted away from the public they exist to serve. They no longer protect our interests. They merely perform a morality play for one another. Our country is now in the grip of a new ruling class whose members see themselves not as custodians of a living nation but as supervisors of a global humanitarian project that has no borders, no limits, and no loyalty to the people whose taxes fund their salaries. Their defining ideology, as I will show you, is suicidal empathy: a deeply twisted worldview that is destroying our country in the name of showing empathy to others.”

Read that quote twice. Goodwin is not describing incompetence.

He is describing a ruling class that has swapped its loyalty to the nation for loyalty to an abstraction — a “global humanitarian project” with no borders and no accountability. That is a serious charge, and he spends the rest of the book proving it with data, not just anger.

2. “Civilizations, wrote the historian and philosopher Arnold J. Toynbee, die from suicide, not by murder. This book is the story of how Britain, or rather the people who run Britain, turned against their own nation. Britain is not being conquered. It is not being invaded. Worse, it is being abandoned by the very people who were meant to protect it. It is not being pushed off a cliff. It is walking off a ledge, led by a new generation of rulers who have clearly decided that maintaining the nation that was entrusted to them is no longer a priority.”

That Toynbee line stopped me cold. We covered Toynbee before in our Academy writings elsewhere!

Nations don’t usually get murdered.

They talk themselves into dying—in this case—-that talking is death by suicide!

Goodwin’s argument is that within one generation, England as we know it — the country our ancestors built — will simply be gone, replaced by something else, not through invasion but through abandonment from the top.

My Nuggets of Wisdom!

Goodwin backs up every claim with hard numbers. This is not a book of feelings. It’s a book of immigration statistics, crime data, and demographic forecasts, and the picture they paint together is stark.

Western culture and values is being cut off….gradually!

What struck me most is how the institutions Goodwin names — Parliament (again both major political parties), the courts, the BBC, the universities — are supposed to be the guardians of a nation’s identity.

Instead, according to Goodwin, they’ve become something closer to a priesthood performing rituals for each other. He calls it a morality play! Love that phrase!

They are not answering to the people who fund them. They are answering to a global ideology of borderless empathy that has no room for a nation, a people, or a history and most certainly not for western values and for western culture!

I know some readers will call this book Islamophobic.

That is the easy and uneducated dismissal. My answer is simple: see the facts for yourself.

As we are now fond of saying, facts over feelings.

See what’s going on.

Make your own determination.

Goodwin isn’t asking you to trust him — he’s showing you the numbers and letting you draw the conclusion.

I believe Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill would recognize exactly what Goodwin is describing. Both of them understood that a nation’s institutions exist to serve its people, not to manage its disappearance. This book reads like a warning they would have taken seriously.

This pairs naturally with Bernard Lewis’s The Crisis of Islam, another MOJO book brief which is coming soon. Lewis wrote about civilizational decline and the long historical forces that reshape Muslim nations from within.

Goodwin is showing you that same story playing out in real time, in a country most Americans think they already understand.

That country, the UK, is gradually going away.

Final Recommendation

This book is for anyone who thinks what’s happening in Britain or the UK writ large, has nothing to do with America.

It does. Don’t be an ostrich and stick your head in the sand!!

For the UK, this book is urgent and alarming. Goodwin is describing a country in the final stages of a slow-motion collapse, led by people who no longer see protecting the nation as their job.

Incidentally, at this writing, the Reform party (made up largely of disaffected conservative voters and defectors—who believe the Tory party under Boris Johnson sold out the UK people in 2019), is being led by Nigel Farage and is gaining momentum against both major parties. So we will see what happens!

Most importantly, for us here in America, the tone should be different — somber and reflective.

We are not there yet. But the warning signs are here in America.

But Goodwin’s warning is that the same forces are already at work in the UK, and that America is just twenty (or less) years behind and it is coming fast!

Read the book. And pray. Because the American people are facing what the UK has been facing for the last twenty years.
